Steps away from Grenette Square, the unofficial civic core of the unofficial capital of the French Alps, Le Grand Hotel is (unofficially) about as central as a hotel can be in this part of the world. And its a reminder that Grenoble trades at least as much on the cultural pleasures of city life as it does on proximity to all those world-class ski slopes. Its a mountain hotel to be sure the views from the balconies off the best rooms will attest to that but its one whose breakfast lounge is named after a Stendhal novel, and whose attractive little library is stocked with a well-curated selection of art books. In short, its miles more sophisticated than most of what youll find outside of town. Behind the buildings imposing 1870 faade is a strikingly contemporary hotel. While the public spaces let fly with some bold pops of color, especially in the retro-futuristic furnishings, the guest rooms employ a gentler palette of white and black, rarely straying further than the occasional dark wood. Its an urbane, almost masculine look, though not without some softness. Billowing, downy white bedding and white velvet slippers make clear that, despite the hotels good looks, comfort comes first. Outside, the neighborhood is brimming with restaurants and cafs. So much so, in fact, that the buildings can barely hold them; tables spill out onto the streets and diners fill the balconies above the Place Grenette. After a leisurely outdoor meal, the cultural life of the city is close at hand. Its a pleasant five-minute walk to the Grenoble Museum and its concert hall, and not much farther to many of the citys best galleries, shops and bars.
